Grameenphone is now taking active steps to create a safer and cleaner mobile environment for its customers in Bangladesh. Based on professional assessments made by INTERPOL, Grameenphone will block web domains that offer illegal child sexual abuse content. This is an initiative to prevent crimes from being committed, but it is also an initiative to protect the victims.

Safeguarding future generations

“It is our duty to safeguard our future generation. And to do so we need to know that what they learn from the Internet will help them form a balanced, developed intellect. It’s upon us to let them experience the great tool that is the Internet without its harmful vices,” said CEO of Grameenphone Oddvar Hesjedal.

Cooperating with GSMA to prevent child sexual abuse content

As a company in the Telenor Group, Grameenphone is part of the GSM Association’s Mobile Alliance against Child Sexual Abuse Content. The company now joins a global industry drive to prevent the misuse of its Internet services. This initiative from Grameenphone aims to deny access to child sexual abuse content, but it is not an investigative tool. Blocking is put in place only as a means to prevent illegal distribution of documented sexual abuse, and to prevent further abuse of children.

Grameenphone makes progress in bridging the digital divide

As the pioneer of mass mobile telephony in Bangladesh, Grameenphone has done more than simply connect 28 million people throughout the country. In Bangladesh static Internet penetration is only 600,000. Since the launch of Grameenphone’s EDGE service in September 2005, the concept of Internet access has changed forever. The digital divide has been bridged resulting in the emergence of more than five million EDGE users. People in urban and rural areas now have access to high-speed Internet connection through their cell phones. With the Internet becoming a mobile commodity, there is now quicker information flow resulting in greater empowerment.
